BCI Group 24 Batteries
BCI Group 24 batteries are a very popular mid-size battery group, with batteries commonly used in deep-cycle and dual-purpose applications and less as starting batteries.
However, submodel 24F is often used as starting/cranking and dual-purpose battery in cars, trucks, boats, and in industrial applications as mid-range heavy-duty battery required to provide high starting currents, but also to power electric loads for longer period of time.

BCI Group 24 Batteries Dimensions and Features
Maximum physical dimensions of BCI Group 24 batteries are (L x W x H) are 10.25 x 6.8125 x 8.875 inches (260 x 173 x 225 mm), however, there are several 'submodels' of this BCI Group, as listed in the following comparison chart:
BCI Group Size | L (mm) | W (mm) | H (mm) | L (inches) | W (inches) | H (inches) |
24 | 260 | 173 | 225 | 10 1/4 | 6 13/16 | 8 7/8 |
24F | 273 | 173 | 229 | 10 3/4 | 6 13/16 | 9 |
24H | 260 | 173 | 238 | 10 1/4 | 6 13/16 | 9 3/8 |
24R | 260 | 173 | 229 | 10 1/4 | 6 13/16 | 9 |
24T | 260 | 173 | 248 | 10 1/4 | 6 13/16 | 9 3/4 |
Also, some of the very popular BCI Groups feature physical dimensions similar to the Group 24 dimensions:
- Group 24: 10 1/4 x 6 13/16 x 8 7/8 inches (260 x 173 x 225 mm),
- Group 25: 9 1/16 x 6 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches (230 x 175 x 225 mm),
- Group 34: 10 1/4 x 6 13/16 x 7 7/8 inches (260 x 173 x 200 mm).
There are other similar groups, but groups 25 and 34 are 'the most similar' and 'the most popular'.
As one can see, both group 25 and group 34 batteries may fit the battery compartment intended for group 24 (except that group 25 is a little bit wider, but almost always that difference is negligible).
But, since group 24 features the larger volume, it also features better characteristics, at least regarding deep cycle applications - group 25 and group 35 feature models that are intended for starting/cranking applications only and thus come with CCA/MCA ratings at least as good as CCA/MCA ratings of the best group 24 dual-purpose batteries.
BCI Group 24 batteries on average feature nominal capacity of 75-85 Ah (20h), maximum CCA rating of 800-850 Amps, maximum MCA rating of 900-1000 Amps, Reserve Capacity (RC) value of 140-180 minutes and they weigh between 43 and 57 pounds (~19.5 - 25.8 kg).
Most popular BCI Group 24 batteries are given in the following chart:

BCI Group 24 Dual-Purpose Batteries
Dual-purpose group 24 batteries are not as common as deep-cycle only batteries. But, nonetheless, dual-purpose group 24 batteries are used as industry batteries and as marine/automotive batteries in single battery systems where one battery must power many devices while the main engine is offline, but also must be able to crank decent size gas or diesel engine, even when not fully charged.
One of the most popular Group 24 dual-purpose batteries is NorthStar NSB-AGM24F AGM battery, which features 76 Ah 20h capacity, 840 Amps CCA rating, 1000 Amps MCA rating, RC of 160 minutes and weighs 57 pounds (~25.8 kg).
NorthStar NSB-AGM24F comes with the carrying handle, but don't carry it too far - it is not that light :)
NorthStar NSB-AGM24F battery features '24F' as part of its label, requiring special attention to the actual battery's dimensions. According to the manufacturer official site, its size is (L x W x H) 10.87 x 6.77 x 8.75 inches (276 x 172 x 222 mm) - the battery is slightly longer than standard 24F battery by 0.12 inch (~3 mm).
This extra length is rarely of an issue, just be aware of it.
With its 1500 Pulse cranking Amps, 4-year limited warranty, and up to 900 charging/discharging cycles down to 50% DoD, NorthStar NSB-AGM24F is one of the best batteries in its class.
However, such features do come at a certain price, but considering its features, the price is more than acceptable.

BCI Group 24 Deep-Cycle Batteries
BCI Group 24 deep-cycle batteries are used for standby/cycle applications where maximum discharge currents rarely exceed 100-150 Amps, like trolling motor batteries, solar/wind batteries, electric vehicles, wheelchairs, UPS, and similar.
One of the most popular group 24 deep cycle batteries is Mighty Max ML75-12 battery - it is a very balanced design, featuring very affordable price, 77 Ah 20h capacity, 75 Ah 10h capacity, and 48.5 Ah 1h capacity.
Its manufacturer doesn't state actual RC value, but Mighty Max ML75-12 is able to provide 48.5 Amps for 1 hour (down to 9.6 volts) or 46.5 Amps for 1h down to 10.5 volts), 18.9 Amps for 3 hours (down to 10.5 volts), 13.2 Amps for 5 hours (down to 10.8 volts), etc.
Mighty Max ML75-12 battery is a spill-proof AGM battery weighing 50.7 pounds (slightly less than 23 kg). When the battery is used in deep-cycle applications, the number of charging/discharging cycles depends on the Depth of Discharge (DoD):
- 100% DoD: ~190 charging/discharging cycles with the capacity loss down to 80%, ~220 cycles charging/discharging cycles with the capacity loss down to 60%,
- 50% DoD: ~370 charging/discharging cycles with the capacity loss down to 80%, ~460 cycles charging/discharging cycles with the capacity loss down to 60%,
- 30% DoD: ~900 charging/discharging cycles with the capacity loss down to 80%, ~1180 cycles charging/discharging cycles with the capacity loss down to 60%.
These are very good features for rather affordable battery - Mighty Max ML75-12 is commonly used to power smaller sump pumps, electric trolling motors, wheelchairs, electric scooters, and other similar vehicles, etc.

Long Story Short: Other BCI Group 24 batteries are perhaps not as popular as Mighty Max ML75-12, but some of them come with rather notable features:
- VMAXTANKS MR107-85 is not as good a deep discharge performer as very similar VMAXTANKS MB107-85 or VMAXTANKS SLR-85 batteries, but it features RC value of 160 minutes (2h 40 minutes), 85 Ah 20h capacity and if required, 700 Amps MCA rating. This battery is optimized for deep discharge applications, but if required, it can easily crank smaller internal gas and diesel engines requiring 200-250 cranking Amps.
- Universal Power Group UB12750 is another affordable deep cycle battery model, very similar in performances to Mighty Max ML75-12.
